An isoenzyme-based key was established for date palm cultivars identification. cultivars composition of 11 date palm groves were compared. The study confirmed the predominance of date palms derived from germinated seeds and called 'khalts'. The most frequent cultivars were 'jihel' and 'bou-feggous'.

The principal constraints of date palm (phoenix dactylifera l) culture in the maghreb countries, old age of the trees and diseases such as bayoud. The plant genetic diversity is necessary for the improvement of its culture in the future.
